Noel Donaldson contacted to help solve a mystery...........

AN amateur historian is trying to solve a century-plus Caithness mystery which has Scots hero Robert the Bruce at its centre.

The King is featured in a book entitled “The Days of Bruce” which retired Ayrshire man, Derry Martin recently acquired.

The Kilmarnock and District History Group member came across the book when surfing E-Bay and purchased it. As every Scots pupil knows, Bruce defeated, King Edward’s army in a famous victory, the Battle of Bannockburn.

On the fly leaf was the dedication- “To James Morrison with best wishes from James Kennedy, Keiss Schoolhouse , December 24, 1895”. The book was written by Grace Aguilar and published by James Nesbet of London.

Derry, who is retired, decided to do some research, but his, obvious, first-port-of-call, Keiss primary school, drew a blank, not surprising, given the timescale.
Was the book a Christmas gift presented to a teacher or an outstanding pupil, by the then headmaster?
