Yarrows Heritage Trust located near Thrumster has a number of projects and one of them for the last few years has been the restoration of the Thrumster Railway Station that was once part of the Wick Lybster railway.   Recently the Trust managed to locate and recover the original station platform sign.

THE popular Caithness Big Band returns to Wick's Norseman Hotel, later this month, for a charity bash in aid of the Caithness Heart Support Group.   It's one of the group's biggest fundraisers and tickets both for the event, on September 13, and raffle, are available.

The success of the exhibition, which opened to a capacity audience of well over 100 people on the evening of Wednesday 2nd July at Castletown Heritage Centre, was down to the artistic talents and generosity of locals and others further afield.  Businesses near and far also gave generously to support the event.

Members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers were pleased with the dry weather on Sunday morning as they were busy painting the second coat of wood preservative at the Loch of Mey bird hide.   The local Scottish Ornithologists' Club (SOC) were fortunate to access a grant from the Action Earth Awards to pay for the wood preservative, brushes, wood and guttering to undertake vital repairs at the bird watching facility.

Participants in a 10k-5k funrun/walk along the Welbeck Estate road at Berriedale on Sunday were rewarded with a lovely sunny day.  Funds raised went to the Red Cross, Macmillan Cancer Support and the refurbishment of the local hall.

Another good entry for the 2014 model boat show run each year by Pentland Model Boat Club.   The winning entries in each of the categories chosen by the judges were - Warships - K80 - Ian Moore Search and Rescue - Taylors Thurso Life Boat - Ted Miller Fishing Boats - Thorsa - Ian Mackintosh Work Boats - Ballachylist - Dave Lambert Leisure Boats - Jet Stream - Ted Miller Sailing Boats - Grand Banks Schooner - Billy Mackintosh The overall winner was Ted Miller for his Taylors Thurso Lifeboat.

Members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers, with direction from John Parrott from Coille Alba, undertook control measures on Giant Hogweed along the Wick riverside last weekend.   Growing to 20 feet high, this impressive plant was once planted in gardens but has become a problematic invasive species in Britain, particularly along river banks.
