Outreach Service For Blind Veterans
NEW OUTREACH SERVICE FOR BLIND VETERANS LAUNCHED IN ARGYLL AND BUTE AND HIGHLANDS.   A new outreach service to support blind and visually impaired veterans has been launched covering Argyll and Bute as well as the Highlands and Islands.

What is the Community Challenge Fund about? The Council has agreed to work with Community Councils and other community organisations to encourage community empowerment, by introducing a community challenge fund of £1m of recurring expenditure to support community projects which explore new ways of delivering services at a local level.   The prime objective of the fund is to help deliver the Council’s Programme (pdf).

HEAD FOR THE PUDDING NIGHT TO EAT ALL THE PUDDINGS YOU CAN ON 26TH APRIL To raise money for Belize 2013 conservation and community work trip for 10 students.  The silent auction/pudding night will take place on Friday the 26th of April from 7 - 9pm in the main hall.

Medicines Waste Campaign Launched
NHS Highland will this week (09 April) launch a Medicines Waste campaign in a bid to reduce the amount of medicine that is being wasted across the area.   Medicines waste is a big issue with up to half of medicines not being taken as prescribed and there is an estimated £3m a year spent in Highland on medicines that end up not being used.

Never too late to get MMR
With figures showing there are now over 600 cases of measles confirmed in Wales, NHS Highland is taking the opportunity to remind parents about the MMR vaccine which is available for children at 12 months and a second dose at approximately three years and four months.   So far this year there have been six confirmed cases of measles across Scotland, none in Highland but, with travel, especially over the Easter holidays, it only needs one person to return home with measles for it to spread.

Have You Seen This Man and Vehicle In Thurso?
Police looking to trace driver of vehicle Police are looking to trace the driver of a dark grey / blue coloured hatchback vehicle, following an incident which occurred on Provost Sinclair Drive, Thurso around 12.30 pm on Wednesday 10th April.   The vehicle was described as having roof racks on either side and was being driven by a male who was approximately 40 years old, medium build with a bald head.

Council amend rent arrears policy to assist tenants affected by Bedroom Tax
Highland Councillors have agreed to adopt a “sympathetic ” policy for those Council house tenants affected by the new Bedroom Tax, who unavoidably fall into rent arrears through the loss of housing benefit for under-occupying their homes.   It is estimated that 2,200 Highland Council tenants (16%) are affected by the introduction of the Social Rented Sector Size Criteria Restriction (Bedroom Tax), which sees people who are under-occupying by one bedroom having their benefit reduced by 14% and those under-occupying by more than one room having their benefit reduced by 25%.

Police Going For Egg Collectors All Over Highland After Biggest Case
Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division along with partners in the National Wildlife Crime Unit acknowledge the sentence given to Keith Liddell today in what was possibly the largest wildlife crime case in Scotland involving the illegal possession and trading of rare birds' eggs.   The intelligence led operation, which saw the home of Liddell being searched under warrant on 24 June 2009, saw more than 2,300 eggs seized, most of which were concealed behind a false bookcase.

TEC Services Enforcement Officers, supported by the dog warden/pest control officers for Caithness and Sutherland will be out and about in the Caithness area from today (Monday 8 April 2013) undertaking patrols in known problem areas to deter and catch irresponsible dog owners and litter louts that risk harm to our communities and countryside through dog fouling, littering and fly tipping.   Anyone caught not clearing up after their dog or who is observed to drop litter or fly-tip waste will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

Personal Independence Payment Begins To Replace Disability Living Allowance
On 8 April 2013 the Government introducd a new benefit called Personal Independence Payment (PIP) to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for eligible working age people aged 16 to 64.   PIP is being introduced in stages.

Six drink drivers caught in the Highlands & Islands over the weekend.   Six people were arrested for drink driving over the weekend across the Highlands and Islands Division of Police Scotland.

Council report good progress in contacting Council tenants about Welfare Reform changes
The Highland Council has provided information and advice to more than 600 Council house tenants affected by the reduction in their Housing Benefit due to the implementation of the Bedroom Tax.  This new legislation from the UK Government, that came into effect from 1 April, means a deduction is being imposed on working age housing benefit claimants who live in council or housing association homes where it has been deemed that they are under occupying their home.

People across Scotland are being urged to seek assistance to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, helping to reduce household energy bills.   Housing and Welfare Minister Margaret Burgess today outlined that households can apply for financial assistance from the Scottish Government of up to £1,200 to pay for energy improvement measures such as cavity and loft insulation, double glazing, a new boiler or draft proofing.
