Funding Opportunity - Bank of Scotland – Small Grants Programme
Bank of Scotland – Small Grants Programme The Bank of Scotland has announced that the next closing date for applications to its Small Grants Programme is the 14th October 2013.   Through the small Grants Programme, grants of between £1,000 and £20,000 are available to support projects the develop and improve local communities; and or help with financial literacy and financial inclusion.

Funding Opportunity Climate Challenge Fund
Climate Challenge Fund Keep Scotland Beautiful, has announced that the next deadline for applications to the Climate challenge fund is the 30th September 2013.   Through the Climate Challenge Fund, Communities across Scotland can apply for grants of up to £150,000 per year to help reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient.

Free dog ‘MOTs’ for the Highlands
Highland dog owners are invited to bring their pooches along for a free wellbeing check at PDSA’s PetCheck vehicle between Tuesday 3 to Friday 13 September.   In partnership with The Highland Council, the veterinary charity’s annual UK-wide PetCheck tour will be at the following locations from 9am to 4pm.

Putting Gaelic Education on the Map
Gaelic Education Map Highland Councillor Hamish Fraser, Chair of the Gaelic Implementation Group will today launch an online map which shows where the Council provides Gaelic Education in Nurseries and Playgroups, and in Primary and Secondary Schools.   The map is a welcome addition to the Council’s public information resources.

New Home for NOSCA Treats
After over a decade, The North of Scotland Childcare Association’s Treats service are saying good bye to Miller Academy and are relocating their services from 20th August 2013 to the upgraded Ormlie Community Centre in Henderson Street, Thurso.   NOSCA Treats has witnessed an increase in numbers of children and families wishing to access childcare and quality play opportunities and as a result have outgrown the centre based in Miller academy Primary School.

Chance for a peek behind the scenes in September
The Highland Doors Open Days programme for 2013 has just been launched with a mix of tried-and-tested favourites and new places to visit this year.   2013 Open Doors Booklet There’s a total of 34 venues in the Highland programme – in Caithness, Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, Inverness, Badenoch & Strathspey and Lochaber - over four weekends in September starting on Saturday 7th September.

At meeting of the Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee held in Drummuie offices, Golspie on Monday 19th August 2013 members were updated on the pilot Junior Warden Scheme which took place recently in Thurso.   Three of the participants, Amy, Marra and Lannie, gave an insightful presentation to the Committee on what they have achieved.

School transport passes for Highland pupils
All Highland pupils return to school tomorrow and The Highland Council had intended to issue passes for school transport to all pupils who are entitled to free transport on Stagecoach services.   However, due to technical reasons not all passes have been issued.

Police in Highlands and Islands to target speeding motorists around schools
Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division will be targeting speeding motorists around the region's roads from tomorrow for the next fortnight to ensure the safety of all school attendees and encourage motorists to drive at lesser speeds.   The division-wide initiative will focus on all primary and secondary schools from tomorrow (20 August 2013) until next Friday (30 August 2013), particularly in areas where those attending are known to walk to and from school.

With a recent survey revealing an average of seven bottles and cans on every 100 metres of Scotland’s roads, “Flingin’s mingin so drive your carbage home” is the message being sent out to those who throw rubbish out of cars and trains.   The Highland Council is encouraging a clear up and clamp down on litter on Scotland’s transport network as part of the Litter Week of Action, from 19th - 25th August, organised by Zero Waste Scotland.
