Partnership sees Defibrillators installed in Leisure Centres
Phase one of a partnership between British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland, High Life Highland and The Scottish Ambulance Service came to fruition today with the installation of 19 Defibrillators across the network of High Life Highland leisure centres.   BHF Scotland, the nation's heart charity, had been looking to identify locations where a community defibrillator could be valuable, for example remote communities and urban venues with high footfall or where clusters of cardiac arrests have previously occurred.

Report published today confirms qualified early years and child care workers give children the best possible start in life.   The report Knowledge, Confidence and Leadership: Childhood Practice in Action is published this week by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

The Caithness & North Sutherland Fund (CNSF), a grant body funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), received its second instalment of £300k at a recent stakeholder event held in the new low level waste repository vault at the Dounreay site.   This funding is the latest instalment of the NDA's £4M community benefit package being provided via DSRL.

Avonlea, a new five bedded purpose built residential unit for young people has opened in Wick.   Providing excellent modern facilities with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, Avonlea on West Banks Avenue replaces the Northcote Street residential unit which was built in the 1970s and deemed no longer fit for purpose.

A new extension to increase floor space in Lidl's store is underway at Wick.   Lidl opened on 20th March 2003 and after more than 10 years of business is increasing in size in many of their stores showing that they have confidence that Wick shows to be one of the places for growth.

Missing boy Kieran Angus - Thurso
UPDATE - Sunday 29 June 2014 Missing teenager Kieran ANGUS who had been reported missing in Wick has been traced safe and well.  Police would like to thank the public for their assistance Police in Thurso are anxious to trace Kieran Angus (15) who has been reported missing.

The Far North Youth Orchestra is a brand new symphony orchestra, conducted by Susie Dingle, for young musicians aged 8 to 13 who live in Caithness or Sutherland.   On Saturday 28th June 2014 the group held a day of practice and lessons followed by a short concert to show parents and friends what they had learned that day.

2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy plan for Highland approved
A 2014 Legacy Plan that highlights opportunities for Highland communities over the next five years, as a result of the Commonwealth Games, has been welcomed by Members of The Highland Council.   Councillors have given their approval for the Highland Legacy Plan which has been produced by High Life Highland for The Highland Council which is responsible for delivering the plan.

Public input for future LEADER funding in Highland
The Council will be running a series of public consultation events across the Highlands to give communities the chance to pass on their views on how the new 2014-2020 LEADER Development strategy could support local development over the coming years.  Feedback from the public sessions will be used to prepare a strategy which has to be submitted to the Scottish Government for approval in September this year, in order to secure funds for the new programme.

Caithness and Sutherland contain rock formations of outstanding geological interest, which span over 2,800 million years and include some of the oldest surface rocks in Britain.   Along the west coast, the oldest rock in the region, Lewisian gneiss, creates a landscape of low hills and scattered lochans.

North Highland Young Engineers is an independent group that aims to introduce young people to engineering an technology by competing in the Greenpower Challenge, a competition in which team design, build and race electric cars at circuits all over the UK.  NHYE are one of the leading teams, ranked 3rd internationally for the last two years, the aim for 2014 is to improve on that! The first race of the year was at Nutts Corner, Northern Ireland.

Nine drink/drug drivers caught in final week of summer drink drive campaign
Drivers in the Highlands and Islands are once again reminded of the 'Dont' Risk It' message being delivered by Police Scotland following the end of a national drink/drug driving campaign which came to a close on Friday 13 June 2014.   Across Scotland, 9000 drivers were stopped and breathalysed by police with over 1000 of these taking place across the Highlands and Islands, during the two week summer drink drive campaign.

Highland MSP gives road safety input to representatives around the world
Highlands & Islands (Labour) MSP and Road Safety Campaigner, David Stewart was invited to and attended the FIA Foundation Road Safety Scholarship Programme in London last Friday, when he met not only the organisers, but scholars from countries such as Italy, South Africa, Poland, Argentina, Portugal, China, Maldova, Lebanon and Uruguay, to brief them in relation to his road safety work in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland and in particular in relation to his Sensible Driving - Always Arriving campaign.  This campaign has been up and running for over four years and its main thrust is to try and persuade the UK Government to pilot a form of graduated licence in Scotland.
