Health chiefs in the Highlands have been forced to apologise after a newborn baby died.   The girl died of the e.coli sepsis infection just 40 hours after being born at Caithness General Hospital in Wick.

Staff from a range of agencies who work with vulnerable adults in Highland have been getting training to help prevent people falling foul of financial scams.   In another example of integrated working involving NHS Highland, Police Scotland and Trading Standards, the training included films, presentations and discussions, and provided staff with advice and guidance on how to spot and prevent financial harm.

Earth Hour
NHS Highland is urging its staff to switch off their lights at home for an hour on Saturday (19th March 2016), as part of a demonstration for action on climate change.   The health board has emailed its employees suggesting that they sign up for Earth Hour 2016 - the worlds biggest annual celebration for our planet.

Free support event in Wick for people with Type 2 diabetes
Diabetes UK will run one of a national series of free educational events to provide expert advice and information for people recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in Wick on Tuesday 5 April.   The Living with Diabetes Day will be held from 9.30am to 4.30pm at Pulteney Centre, Huddart Street in Wick.

Wick Community Council has set up a meeting after one in February had to be cancelled when Elaine Mead did not travel due to bad weather forecast.   Thursday 17th March 2016 at 6.30pm in Pulteney Centre (Smith Function Room) A new off-shoot group of the community council has been started following a meeting on 3rd March 2016.

Caithness Members of The Highland Council have set aside £30k from the Ward Discretionary Budget to let the local community decide for themselves which projects are needed in their area.  Whether you want to organise a dance for young people, a healthy living project, a crime prevention idea, a lunch club for older residents, a community art project, the only limit is your imagination.

Highland Council has listened to public feedback on Eden Courts decision to cease running the SQA National Five Drama course.   The council is to provide £11,500 towards the running of this course for the financial year 2016/17 from the Councils Care and Learning Services budget.

Launch of strategy to tackle wildlife crime in the Highlands
A strategy to tackle wildlife crime for the next three years was launched on Monday 14th March 2016 been launched in the Highlands.   The Highland branch of the Partnership Against Wildlife Crime (PAW) Scotland action plan is a local collaboration between a number of organisations including Police Scotland, Highland Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, RSPB Scotland, Scottish Land and Estates, National Farmers Union Scotland, Association of Salmon Fishery Boards and the Scottish Gamekeepers Association to name but a few.

All movements are time controlled by the police.   First Movement - Large Towhead on Tuesday 15th March leaving from Dry Dock at Wick Harbour around 09:30hrs and will take approximately 3 hours to complete.

One of the latest towheads to pass through the town again attracted considerable interest.   It successfully negotiated the turns from Scalesburn into Willowbank, though not with a little manoevuring but was held up while turning into Henrietta Street was held up by a lamp standard light.

Residents of Caithness can now drop donations to the local food bank into Caithness Horizons Museum in Thurso.   Canned, dried and tinned food products can be submitted to Caithness Horizons reception team who are working with the Highland Foodbank volunteers.

Last Chance for Community Groups in the Scottish Highlands to Enter Awards
Time is running out for community projects in the Scottish Highlands to enter Clydesdale Bank's Spirit of the Community Awards 2016 for a chance to share a funding boost of £75,000 to make a real difference in their local area.   Now in its fourth year, the awards programme was launched earlier this year to recognise and support community projects which are going the extra mile.

Highland Council primary schools to compete in Scotland-wide Euroquiz
Primary 6 pupils from schools in Highland Council will compete in the local heats of a Scotland-wide quiz on Europe on Wednesday 9 March 2016 which has been organised by the award-winning Scottish European Educational Trust, with the support of the European Parliament Office in the UK.   Thirty three schools will take part in the Highland Council heat, which will take place on 9 March at Dingwall Academy, with pupils arriving from 10am for a 10.30am start.

Members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers have been busy carrying out maintenance work around the bird haven at St Johns pool near Dunnet in Caithness.   While some of the group cut back encroaching trees from the car park area and path others weeded an area in front of the main hide.
