An amateur geologist is helping students to gain a rock solid education with a donation of geological samples.   Calum Anton from Fortrose has given over 50 rock specimens to the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Local Groups Share Funding Pot of £75000
In the latest round of awards from the E.ON Camster Community Fund over £75,000 has been distributed to eleven local projects.   Awards ranged from £255 to hire a bouncy castle for the Watten Pre-School Parents Council annual Christmas party, to £25,000 to Lybster Community Improvement Fundraising Group to contribute to the purchase and installation of equipment to transform the playpark.

Highland primary and nursery enrolment
Highland Council is inviting parents and carers to enrol their child for nursery and primary 1 for the 2018/19 school year which starts on 21 August 2018.   If your child will be five years of age on or before 28 February 2019, they are eligible to enrol for primary 1.

A leading children's charity are seeking volunteer mentors across the Highlands to work with young people supported by a project Action for Children have just launched in Inverness and Ross shire.  Caithness and Sutherland are next!   Action for Children in the Highlands have begun delivering ‘Intandem', a needs led volunteer mentoring service funded by Inspiring Scotland, for young people aged 8-14 who face complicated and challenging situations.    Intandem has been set up to support young people coming into, or leaving the care system, and provide a positive adult role model.

Cognitive improvements to be included in Blue Badge scheme The disabled person's parking badge pilot, which was launched in April 2016, has been made permanent by the Scottish Government.   The eligibility criteria were revised and extended under a pilot to allow carers and relatives of people who pose a risk to themselves or others in traffic to apply for a disabled person's parking badge, provided they meet the criteria.

Scots are being urged to start their New Year's resolutions early and pledge to walk for 15 minutes a day, as the country takes steps towards becoming the world's first Daily Mile nation.   Earlier this year the Scottish Government wrote to workplaces, schools, nurseries, colleges and universities encouraging people to walk, jog or run a mile every day - and has today published guidance for early learning and childcare services on how the Daily Mile can become an integral part of younger children's early learning and development.
